Class 13- Technology: A Catalyst

Technology: A Catalyst for Teaching and Learning in the Classroom
No one in the business world would argue that we should limit technology. This article also proves that no one should limit technology in education. The internet has brought a new wealth of information to students and the world. Research is very helpful to education with the use of the internet. Teenagers of today use the internet for many reasons: communication, research, education and the list goes on. Limiting technology would hinder the education process for any student.
Computer access between the rich and poor is a consistent problem, but having these resources in schools helps to lessen the gap. Students need to have equal opportunity to gain knowledge of computers and technology in order to be successful in today’s society.

Using technology improves student achievement
The article starts out by discussing how much money is spend on technology, and from all the money being spend on technology researchers are wondering on how this is improving student achievement. How can schools ensure that technology supports student achievement? What factors need to be in place to support the effective use of technology? These were questions that the article would like to prove. One article started to discuss the No Child Left behind that started in 2002. This movement has stopped the technology movement to schools. Schools are now worried about highly qualified teachers and the details behind the movement or law. No child left behind states that all students be computer literate by the end of the eight grade. This article was really amazing, because I believe that many districts are so concerned about teachers being high qualified, they are forgetting that students are to be at grade level in all they do, which includes technology. In order for all students to be computer literate all students need equal opportunity.
In the article they also stated ways to come up with technology budgets. This is important for districts to understand, when spending money in technology, they need to remember that money needs to be set aside to train teachers to use these programs. I think that our district is going great things with technology, and it is just in the last few years that I have seen this improvement. Money is being spent on Smart boards, and having a smart board in my classroom now for only 1/4 of the year, I can see engagement improve with all of my classes. Our district provides training on Smart Boards, and I see this is very valuable for many teachers.
In the end of the article, it proved that using technology does improve student acheivement. These articles were worldwide studies for Germany, and New Jersey school districts. I agree with these articles and I have seen this within my own classroom, when using the smart board.

Class 9- Improving Math grades with Technology
Class 9- Improving Math with Technology
New research has proven that technology has improved 4th- 8th grade math achievement. It is allowing students to use higher-level thinking helping with math comprehension. Computers allowed students to use their higher level thinking. The article also stated how important it is for teachers and school communities to be educated in technology. Students need to use a multiple amount of media resources. The article discussed the more resources that they can use the high the achievement in Math.
The article proved that training needs to be given to teachers and school communities for great advancements in math. I can see this within my classroom. Many of the programs like publisher, powerpoint, imovie, and podcasting involves high order thinking skills. These skills will only help students improve scores in all subjects.

Lead, Don't lecture
Having students experience ideas, allows them to understand the deeper meaning of things. Memorizing the rules of a problem will not help a student in the future, giving the student something to remember about the topic, and having an experience with the topic allows for a deeper understanding.
I have seen this in my classroom. I know if I can have a hands on project or lab. I know my students will have a greater understanding of the topic. When assessing my student, a quick reminder remember in the lab when this happened. All most every time, a student can recall the event that I was talking about.
Having students develop their own learning, reinforces the material much easier than lecture. It is much more fun at the same time.

Science and Math Standards
The State of Arizona has intergated many of the state standards into math and science. My science standards include graphing and manipulating data, which are also found in the math standards. The article wanted to prove that standards need to be addressed across the curriculum.
Using standards in a broader context not just with content. Content Standards need to be looked at like state standards. We need to incorporate all standards within our curriculum, and not worry about content as an individual standard.

Webquests
Webquest-
A webquest is an interactive unit created throughout the internet. A webquest is more that just an assignment. A webquest is an on going process of individualized instruction. A webquest is a wonderful way to accommodate for all learners. It is a constructivist way of instruction. Students are in control of their own learning using technology. A webquest can help all levels of learners. It pushes the gifted learner to think outside of the box, and it helps struggling students that may not be working at grade level to reach his or her level. All students and learners benefit from this type of learning. A webquest is a great tool to use in all classrooms.

Class 2- Readings EDT 548: Constructivism
All individuals learn in their own way, and constructivism is the theory that all learners learn at their own pace, style and structure. Differentiated learning is one way to accommodate for all learners. Each learner has his or her own learning styles. Multiple intelligences are styles of learning based on individual characteristics. All individuals have the right to learn, and accommodating to all students learning is our jobs as educators.
